Bio
Tiggy Augery (born 1995 in Chandler, Arizona) is an American artist based in San Antonio, Texas. Her work blends painting and sculpture, using primarily oil paint on hand-built wooden structures. Within her pieces she explores the human connection to mythology, religious experience across culture, and personal conversations made public. Tiggy spent her childhood moving from country to country with her family, constantly adapting to change and seeing the world through fresh eyes. She served six years in the US Navy as a language analyst. Tiggy is currently pursuing her MFA at UTSA. Through her art practice she is getting to know herself without restraint or uncertainty, which is reflected in the contemplative and vulnerable state of the women in her work. When not feverishly painting in her home studio, she can be found tending to her garden while listening to a history documentary.
Artist Statement
My work is a collection of personal myths that focus on the construction of self-identity and the process of curating a personality. The women in my paintings are caught in an intimate moment, each adding tales to a collective micro-mythology that every individual must craft for themselves over a lifetime. Thanks to my multicultural upbringing, I am fascinated by human connections across time and cultures. I have been particularly influenced by the ornate qualities of religious architecture, the archetypal symbolism of tarot, and classical mythology. Recently I have felt compelled to work large, applying a solemn sense of grandeur to scenes of vulnerable introspection. This work is deeply personal. I am exploring the idea that one’s own body is a holy place, a self-contained source of experience akin to religion. I paint scenes that reveal quiet, private and raw moments on a large scale to emphasize that even the most unflattering aspects of human life are worthy of appreciation. My idea of refuge is the self and the process we each go through to piece that self together.
